The Association of American Railroads Policy & Economics Department is currently conducting a survey of freight operations in 2017.

For many years, the AAR has collected information on the size and makeup of the U.S. freight railroad industry. We use the information to inform the public and policymakers about the vital role freight railroads of all sizes play; to highlight the importance of freight railroads to state and regional economies; and to support rail industry policy positions.

We typically obtain most of our information on non-Class I railroads through a short survey.  This year, our survey features five questions:

  • Route miles operated
  • Number of employees
  • Number of carloads
  • Number of locomotives
  • Revenue range

We will aggregate the responses from the various railroads into state and national totals. The only railroad-specific information that we will release publicly is miles operated.

In keeping with the times, this year we’re using a quick and easy online survey platform.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Luisa Fernandez-Willey, Senior Economist in the Policy & Economics at 202-639-2323 or [email protected].
