America’s Freight Railroads: Global Leaders Under a Balanced Regulatory System

As the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration has noted, “By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost-effective in the world.” The global superiority of U.S. freight railroads is a direct result of a regulatory system that relies on market-based competition to establish most rail rate and service standards.
