Adrian Arnakis, AAR’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, spoke at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation’s (ITIF’s) How Policymakers Can Accelerate Automation in Freight Transportation event held in Washington, D.C. on February 12th.

Arnakis described the vast array of technologies freight railroads use to enhance the safety and fluidity of their 140,000-mile private network — from wayside detectors that amass Big Data to the fuel management systems that help trains move one ton of freight 479 miles on one gallon of fuel.

Urging policymakers to adopt a performance-based approach to regulations, Arnakis noted  “a good quote I always like to read is from the current FRA Administrator, Ron Batory. He says ‘technology will move faster than the ink can dry on regulations and if we don’t use technology it will pass us up.’ That’s the type of thinking we need from our policymakers and regulators.”
