In Congress
The Association of American Railroads promotes environmentally safe, economically viable public policies that are responsive to railroad issues and reflect unprecedented economic and energy challenges posed by the 21st century. We work with regulatory agencies, Congressional lawmakers and staff to advance sound, smart policies that enable freight railroads to deliver the consistently high levels of service our customers and the American people come to expect from the world’s safest, cleanest and most environmentally-sound system of transportation.
Some of the key public policy issues facing freight railroads today include:
Balanced Regulation
Balanced regulation is the way to ensure freight rail can continue to meet America’s needs. The Staggers Rail Act (1980) created smart, balanced regulation that freed the railroads to succeed and is in effect today. Balanced regulation means lower prices and better service for customers and consumers.
Infrastructure Investment
Freight railroads are a true American success story. They have made wise choices and sound investments and Americans today are getting more of the things they need at more affordable prices. However, America’s need for freight transportation is predicted to skyrocket, and now is the time to prepare for that need and invest in America’s future.
Energy and Environment
Freight railroads are the cleanest, safest, most efficient and most environmentally sound way to keep the country’s freight moving. Americans want green solutions and the railroad industry looks to advance legislation that will allow us to move freight in the most sustainable way.
Safety and Security
Railroads are committed to operating the safest and most secure network possible. By promoting public policy and industry standards, as well as setting critical safety, security and operating guidelines, railroads have dramatically reduced accidents on our railroads.
Passenger Rail
Policymakers should support expansion of freight and passenger rail. More freight and passenger railroading would mean less pollution, lower greenhouse gas emissions, more transportation options, more interconnected communities, and greater transportation efficiency.
