Our nation's freight railroads are a vital force in the U.S. economy and a crucial component of our transportation system.  Railroads handle more than 40 percent of the nation's intercity freight traffic (measured in ton-miles), more than any other mode of transportation.  The U.S. rail industry, which is overwhelmingly privately owned and maintained, stimulates state and local economic activity by providing safe, efficient, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly transportation services.
